BookSummaryClub Blog Blinkist Review (2024)

Updated on the 2nd of March, 2024

You’ve probably seen the book summary app, Blinkist through their advertising, or maybe you’ve heard about them and want to know more.

Whether you’re a student a professional or even just a book nerd like me, there’s no doubt that you already understand the importance of a good nonfiction book.

However, sometimes you don’t have the hours needed to read an entire book only to get a few takeaways, or perhaps you want a quick summary before you commit to buying the whole book.

Don’t worry. It isn’t just you.

Lots of people can’t find time to read relevant books that they should later use for academic assignments or professional reports. Even if it’s for general knowledge, you’re probably too busy to learn as much as you want to.

That’s why we have book summaries! To save time.

In this article, you’ll find a real Blinkist review from a paying subscriber (me) and my recommendation on if you should invest your money with the app or one of the most popular alternatives, such as Headway. As a complete resources for all your books and book summary needs, we have of course also made an article about Blinkist vs Headway which can help you to make the right decision if you are considering some Blinkist alternatives.

Our Blinkist Review Summary

Don’t have time to read the entire review? No stress, here you’ll find a quick rundown of our analysis for you to skim over.

Why listen to me?

I have been a paying customer of Blinkist for a few years now.

I started using Blinkist long before I started this site.

In that time, I have recommended the app to plenty of friends and family who want to read but can’t find the time.

A quick rundown:

There are several book summary apps on the market. So what makes Blinkist so unique?

  • Blinkist helps you manage your reading time. It will allow you to be able to identify the titles that you want to focus on for further reading and the ones you want to avoid altogether.
  • This app is a great educational tool. Whether you’re studying or working, there will never be enough time to read all the new titles and exciting ideas in a particular niche or topic. Reading or listening to summaries means that you can check out these topics without having to spend hours at the library.
  • Every book is broken down into a few chapters highlighting the key ideas. Industry experts and real professionals study the books on your behalf and give you a quick and informative summary that boosts your knowledge.
  • You can save lots of money when you use Blinkist. Whether you’re using the free or premium plan, it’s more cost-efficient than buying online or offline books that you want to use. Moreover, after reading the summary, you might find out that the book wasn’t as useful as you thought it would be.
  • Blinkist caters to the needs of several types of learners. While some people enjoy reading, others are more interested in audiobooks. The blinks are available in written and audio, so you can learn at your convenience.
  • An easy-to-use interface.
  • For future reference, you can highlight the most crucial part of a book and check it out later on your Evernote.

Every summary or insight is called a Blink. You can check it out to enrich your information about a specific topic or have a good idea about a book that you want to buy and read later on.

Why Would You Use Blinkist?

There’s no doubt that nothing compares to a good book.

Sitting in front of the fire with a good book is still one of my favorite past times.

However, this is a review, not a review on reading in general.

These days, there are certain situations when using a book summary service like Blinkist would be more practical and convenient.

Reasons to use Blinkist:

  • The book is not of utmost priority. You want to know what the book is about, but you don’t want to waste hours and days trying to get the message of the author.
  • You want to spend less time reading, and more time working on the lessons from the book.
  • There are mixed reviews about the book, but you like it and think it might be interesting. However, lots of other readers don’t agree with you, so you’re a bit skeptical.
  • You like the message of the book, but it’s full of fluff content that doesn’t offer real value. You want to get to the core and actual value of what you’re reading.
  • There’s nothing wrong with the book. It’s well-written and offers useful information. But you lack the time needed to read it all. Or you might have read it before and need a quick reminder of what it offers.

In all these scenarios, using an app that summarizes books like Blinkist is the right thing to do.

While you can check the table of contents to know what a book is talking about, you should look to read at least 20% of a book before you can decide it.

A book summary can allow you to skip that 20%.

Are book summaries bad for learning?

Using a summary service like Blinkist, you’ll be able to read more books without spending more time.

Reading summaries will help you become an expert on a topic by reading valuable information written by several experts and professionals.

As you keep on exploring different viewpoints, you’ll be able to get the big picture.

So, it sounds as though the more books you can ‘read,’ the better?

Well, that isn’t always the case, as you’ll lose a lot of content by only reading a summary.

There are five steps you should take to make sure reading on Blinkist will help your learning.

How to make the most of book summaries:

  1. Choose a topic: Make sure you’re reading and comparing opinions; you’ll need to choose a topic that interests you and has a range of views.
  2. Read a range of book summaries on that topic by different authors: Where an app like Blinkist comes in handy is being able to read the abstracts of multiple books in one day quickly. Read as many different opinions on the topic as you can. Each book will have varying views on the same problem.
  3. Write down the key lessons from each summary you read: Make sure you’re continually writing down the key lessons from the book summaries you read. This will make sure that you can re-visit the books at a later date, along with making sure you remember those lessons.
  4. When you find an opinion you’re interested in, read the whole book: You’ll find notices and lessons in these summaries that you either agree with or want to learn more about, now you can further explore those authors’ ideas by reading the entire book.
  5. Develop your own opinions on the topic: Once you’ve read a range of views on your chosen topic, you can develop your informed conclusions.

The developers of the Blinkist app check out the best-selling and most popular books in several niches.

They also talk to industry specialists and read reviews until they find the right picks to add their database.

Users can also suggest books for the team at Blinkist to include in their next batch of summaries. These suggestions get added to the wishlist, where members can upvote their favorites.

Every Blinkist summary is around 15-minutes of reading, and there is an audio version too.

The premium plan costs vary depending on your subscription model and also where you are located. However, users can enjoy the premium plan for seven days without having to pay for it so they can get a glimpse of what the premium plan offers.

Actually, to give you a better overview of the pricing depending on your location and type of subscription, I have prepared the table below where I have checked the prices in some of the most popular countries for Blinkist and

Blinkist for teams

Imagine knowing the world’s best nonfiction books at the fingertips of your employees?

Well, Blinkist also offers a pretty cool pricing structure for teams that save a decent amount of money.

Teams pricing structure:

  • Ten employees: $799 a year
  • Twenty employees: $1499 a year
  • Thirty employees: $2099 a year
  • Forty employees: $2599 a year
  • Fifty employees: $2999 a year

You can also contact the team if you’re looking for more than fifty subscriptions.

Additional Blinkist premium features

Obviously, for this review, we have to assume you’re using the premium version. So, here are some of the features offered to premium members.

  • Users can use the app hands-free by listening to a summary or blink and not necessarily read it.
  • You don’t have to be online to use the app. The offline capability is excellent news because you might not have access to the internet all the time. The offline feature allows users to check out their favorite picks or blinks when they’re commuting, traveling, or sitting in the office.
  • There are thousands of books to browse and check out. You have control and choose the blinks that you read or listen to. As the number of titles increases each month, users agree that it’s a good bargain.
  • Using the app, you’ll be able to highlight the ideas that you find interesting. If you’re a professional or a student, you can quickly get back to your highlights for future reference. This is quite convenient because you won’t have to re-read the whole summary to find that particular point that you want to include in a business report or assignment.
  • If you buy the premium plan, you’ll be able to send your books to Kindle for future reference.
  • You can also synchronize your highlights with your Evernote.

I love the highlight feature that Blinkist offers. You can easily highlight any exciting parts as you’re reading. This feature is so important for retention purposes, as well as making the lessons easy to access later.

blinkist highlights of book summaries

All highlights are saved and are easy to access, sort, and even share with your network.

Is Blinkist good value for money?

There’s no doubt that if you’re the type that will use the app, then it’s a bargain because there are lots of amazing books that you can take a look at in a short amount of time.

However, if you get halfway through your trial and find that you aren’t using it, you should cancel.

It doesn’t matter how cheap the service is, or how positive our thoughts on the app are; if you’re not using it, it is a waste of money. No review on the internet will change that.

The Cons of Blinkist

While I have been a user of Blinkist for over a year and use it daily, it isn’t the perfect system.

It wouldn’t be a fair assessment if I didn’t include some things I don’t like about Blinkist.

Here is a list of some of the ways Blinkist can improve in the future.

What I don’t like about Blinkist

  • Nothing compares to reading a whole book. Reading a summary will give you a good idea about the main points, but doesn’t offer the same educational experience
  • Blinkist hires freelancers to summarize their books and a small percentage of summaries are a little underwhelming. I will say that these are getting updated though and the general quality is outstanding
  • There is the occasional summary that is off the mark with the message, partially because they’re summarizing a whole book into ten minutes reading
  • Blinkist is great for business owners and self-development fans but not much else.

You’ll find some who criticize Blinkist for not giving an analysis of the book. However, I don’t see the issue there because Blinkist only promise is to be a summary site.

If you want to learn more about the author’s message, you can always read the entire book.

Should I Use Blinkist?

Busy people love that reading book summaries help them save and manage their valuable time.

On several occasions, you might be interested in a book and read halfway through it, only to find out that it’s not what you need.

Moreover, you might like the book but don’t have time to go through all the fluff content that authors sometimes offer.

You want to get to the core and the essence of the book while focusing on the essential points. Blinkist allows you to do that. However, Blinkist isn’t for everybody. Here is a list of people I believe will love the app, and who will benefit the most from Blinkist.

  • Business owners
  • Students
  • People with interest in nonfiction books
  • Self-help junkies
  • People who need help deciding the next book to read
  • Those with interest in personal finance
  • Solopreneurs and side-hustlers
  • People who want to make the most of their small pockets of time during the day

How to Cultivate a Lifetime Reading Habit

Reading has been proven to increase brain function, lower stress, and promote empathy, not to mention that developing a regular reading routine may improve your thinking capacity and analytical skills.

Here are some simple ways to make reading a permanent habit in your life:

Use Book Summary Apps

A majority of people struggle with time management, so it’s fair to say that you probably won’t have the ability to read a 300-page book in a short span of time, let alone read multiple books. Book summary apps — like Blinkist — are an excellent way to solve this problem.

Such apps provide a concise description of the entire book in just 15 minutes’ worth of text. They summarize the book’s most essential and valuable elements, saving readers a ton of time. Book summaries will help you make the most of your time, even when you’re taking the metro or a lazy evening walk by the lake.

Remember, book summaries are not cheating! Quitting an uninteresting book or even a good book you’re not enjoying is always commendable, since you will be able to move on to better, more enjoyable books. Guess what’s even better? Choosing not to read a terrible book in the first place.

One of the excellent ways to assure a high “hit rate” as far as choosing books is concerned is to evaluate them first, preferably via book summaries. Blinkist is a perfect app for this purpose. It’ll provide you with accurate and short summaries of almost all popular nonfiction books, not to mention that the app’s library is also regularly updated.

Read Book Reviews

Reading book reviews will almost always come in handy as far as understanding the book from a fresh angle is concerned. A typical book review will explain the book’s primary theme, whether you should read it, and who would appreciate it the most. That said, make sure you read book reviews from reputable reviewers only.

Enjoy Reading

Make reading a pleasurable experience rather than a chore. After all, the goal is for you to create healthy habits. Consider reading as a way to unwind during the day. A great way to make reading fun is to make a list of the most important points you learned from a book in a particular sitting.

Discuss a good book with close friends, and always carry a book with you and be excited to finish it and hop on to a new one. Last but not least, keep track of the books you’ve read, and watch yourself create your own mini library.

Final Verdict

All in all, my Blinkist review is very positive.

While nothing beats reading an entire book, if there’s no time, then Blinkist is the next best thing.

I use Blinkist every day and highly recommend it.

The basic plan features random daily picks for people who want to enrich their knowledge in general, but the premium plan is the real deal. When you choose the annual subscription, you can experience it for free and only pay after seven days. This means that you’ll only pay when you’re sure you want to use the app.

The free trial grants you access to all the exciting premium features. You can check out more than 3000 books of your choice, highlight the main ideas, transfer them to Evernote, and even listen to audio files.

I have been a paid user for years and recommend that you give Blinkist a try. You can start the free trial period now. After all, there’s nothing to lose because you can cancel your subscription any time you want.

Browse through the various categories and choose a title to take a look at. See if your Blinkist review is as positive as mine; There’s a whole new world waiting for you.
