Garbage Land:
On the Secret Trail of Trash

Reading • Talk • Booksigning

In the vein of Nickel and Dimed, and Fast Food Nation, Garbage Land takes us behind the scenes and into the corners of our own lives, revealing the fantastic truth behind what we’ve taken for granted or never even thought about.

There is no denying that we live in a society that prides convenience over environmentalism. Each soda bottle, every used battery, the thin plastic used to hold our individually wrapped cheese singles, and even the old sweat-socks we throw away end up someplace. Elizabeth Royte wondered where all this convenience was leading us and embarked on a remarkable journey to find out exactly what does happen to all the trash we leave behind. In Garbage Land, Royte starts with her own refuse from her Brooklyn home and ends up chasing its trail all over the country—literally getting her hands dirty to uncover the secrets of our trash.

Elizabeth Royte has written for the New York Times Magazine, Harper’s, National Geographic, Outside, Smithsonian, and The New Yorker. Her last book, The Tapir’s Morning Bath, was a New York Times Notable Book, praised widely for Royte’s keen observations and narrative skill. She was the recipient of an Alicia Patterson Foundation fellowship in 1999. She lives in Brooklyn.
