In Rebecca Lee's lyrical and dazzling debut novel the seeds of an obsessive love are buried deep in the past and half a world away.

Justine and Peter work together, now, in New York, trying to raise money for a health center in China, but they have known each other since she was a child growing up in Beijing in the early 1970's. Even as everyone around Justine tries to warn her that Peter will never recognize her love, she is driven to find a way to fulfill it, even embezzling funds from their charity.

As the consequences pile up, leading to betrayal and destruction, Rebecca Lee's prose carves out a portrait of Justine, as a woman surrounded by powerful landscapes and history that have shaped her fate.
